The Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS) evaluates hearing loss and fits appropriate amplification solutions to improve patients’ hearing and quality of life. This role includes hearing testing, hearing aid selection, fitting, programming, and follow-up care. The HIS works closely with audiologists and ENT providers to deliver personalized, high-quality hearing healthcare in a clinical setting.Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree or higher preferred
  • Completion of a state-approved Hearing Instrument Specialist program (if applicable)

Qualifications & Experience

  • Current state licensure as a Hearing Instrument Specialist or eligibility to obtain licensure
  • Prior experience fitting and dispensing hearing aids preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficient with hearing aid software and related equipment
  • Customer-service oriented with a commitment to patient-centered care
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team

Responsibilities

  • Conduct hearing evaluations, including air and bone conduction and speech audiometry
  • Recommend, fit, and dispense hearing aids based on patient hearing needs and preferences
  • Program and adjust hearing aids using real-ear measurement and manufacturer software
  • Educate patients and caregivers on hearing aid use, maintenance, and communication strategies
  • Provide routine hearing aid cleanings, troubleshooting, and in-office repairs
  • Maintain accurate patient records and update electronic medical records (EMRs)
  • Manage inventory of hearing aids, accessories, batteries, and supplies
  • Support audiologists and ENT providers in collaborative patient care
  • Attend regular organizational meetings and continuing education as requested
  • Performs additional duties as requested

Typical Physical Demands:

This position involves standing and walking. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required. Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds. Employee will work under fast-paced conditions and may work irregular hours.

Standard Working Conditions:

Normal medical office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work. Frequent exposure  to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
