Causes of Dizziness and Balance Disorders
About 50% of all dizziness is caused by an inner ear disturbance. Some Inner Ear causes of dizziness and balance disorders include:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) which makes up about 50 of the inner ear causes of dizziness
- Meniere’s Disease
- Vestibular Neuritis and Labyrinthitis
- Superior Canal Dehiscence
- Acoustic Neuroma (rare)
- Bilateral Vestibular Loss (rare)
- Perilymph Fistula (rare)
Other causes of dizziness and balance disorders can be neurological (brain) related including but not limited to: stroke; vestibular migraines; Multiple Sclerosis (MS); and Cerebellar Degeneration. Dizziness can also be medically related to low or fluctuating blood pressure, certain prescriptions, as well as psychologically related to anxiety.
