Sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose…they’re all so annoying. The good thing is you don’t have to let these allergy symptoms ruin your life. Allergy shots help your body adapt to allergens that trigger allergic reactions, so you can start enjoying all the things you love around St. Louis.
How Allergy Shots Work
Allergy shots contain a very small amount of the the allergen that bothers you, which could be dust mites, pet dander, pollen, etc. If your doctor thinks you could benefit from this type of allergy treatment, he’ll establish a plan of action that looks something like this:
• You’ll get allergy shots once or twice a week for a few months, with dosage increasing each time.
• You’ll start scheduling maintenance visits every 2-4 weeks for 4 or 5 months.
• Your allergy shots will spread out to just once a month for 3-5 years.
After each allergy treatment visit, your doctor will have you stay 30 minutes afterwards to make sure you don’t experience side effects like a tight throat or shortness of breath. A red spot around the injection site is normal and will go away within 8 hours.
When to Expect Symptoms to Improve
You should be able to breathe better and feel better after about a year of allergy shots. If this isn’t the case, your doctor will discuss other allergy treatment options that might help you if your allergies are more severe than most.
